Asperger syndrome

Asperger syndrome also called as Asperger disorder or Asperger’s is an autism spectrum (Characterized by widespread abnormalities of social interactions and communication, as well as severely restricted interests and highly repetitive behavior) disorder, but Asperger syndrome is differs from autism spectrum by preservation of cognitive and linguistic development. Physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently present but not used for diagnosis.
The term Asperger syndrome is named after the Hans Asperger the Austrian pediatrician ,Who described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication and demonstrated limited empathy with their peers and were physically clumsy. The exact cause of this disorder is still unknown but researcher found genetic involvement, and brain imaging techniques shows normal structures.
Diagnosis:
For diagnosis of Asperger syndrome ,Standard diagnostic criteria require impairment in social interaction and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, activities and interests, without significant delay in language or cognitive development. Unlike the international standard.U.S. Criteria also require significant impairment in day-to-day functioning. Other sets of diagnostic criteria have been proposed by Szatmari et al and by Gillberg and Gillberg
Treatment:
Treatment of sign and symptoms is the key treatment
Different modality of therapy for this disorder includes
- Behavioral therapy like poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness.
- medication, for coexisting conditions such as major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder
- Occupational or physical therapy to assist with poor sensory integration and motor coordination.
- Speech therapy
No medications directly treat the core symptoms of AS but some researcher found giving atypical neuroleptic medications risperidone and olanzapine and (SSRIs) flextime, fluvoxamine and sertraline is beneficial effect for the Asperger disorder.
Prognosis:
This disorder have good prognosis normal life expectancy but have an increased risk of comorbid psychiatric conditions like depression and anxiety disorder which may affect the prognosis.
